There was a bloody clash at the ‘New Bukatera’ located on campus of Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife on Thursday that led to the death of one person.
The deceased was neither a student nor staff of the institution as revealed by the management.
According to the press released by the Public Relations Officers of the University, Mr. Abiodun Olanewaju, a copy of which was made available to our correspondent in Ile-Ife.The institution’s security team were quick enough to intervene into the matter to pacified the situation.
It reads in part “The Quick Response Squad of the security unit of the university was immediately dispatched to the scene on a rescue mission, having shut all the exit roads that could be used as escape routes by the perpetrators. On arrival at the scene, the only victim, who sustained severe head injury was rushed to the University Medical and Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead.
“The security unit of the institution has made some arrests and handed over the suspects to the Moore Police Station. Although, the victim and those presently being interrogated are neither students nor workers of the university.”
He said the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Eyitope Ogunbodede, had sympathize with the family and friends of the victim and reassured the general public, particularly OAU students, their parents/guardians and the entire university community of their safety.
He urged students and members of the university community to “disregard the rumours of cultists’ invasion and go about their studies and businesses without fear of molestation from any quarters.”
