The result of the just concluded Presidential election in Liberia between the 73 year-old Joseph Boakai and the 51 year-old ex-international football star, George Weah held on the 26th December, 2017 showed that the former World footballer of the year won with 80%.
He bagged this victory after sweeping 13 of 15 states with his opponent, Joseph Boakai getting only two states. The final result of the election which is expected four days after election has been proven otherwise due to the efficiency of the electoral body.
The delay in the election which was supposed to hold November 7 was due to the alleged voter fraud and irregularities filed by the party of a third candidate different from George Weah of Congress for Democratic Change (CDC) and Joseph Boakai of the Unity Party.
The incumbent President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf who has been in office for 12 years (since 2006) will be succeeded George Weah who defeated her nominee and Vice President Boakai. Weah’s running mate isJewel Taylor (Charles Taylor’s wife).
“I am deeply grateful to my family, my friends, and my loyal supporters who contributed to our campaign during this extremely long election season,” Weah said on Twitter before the results were announced.
This exemplary feat of George Weah made him the first famous player in the world to attain such high office of his country years after retiring from the game.
