The Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, has on Sunday ordered all the State Command Commissioners of Police and their supervising Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and other police formations nationwide on red alert.
The directive was sequel to the July 2 attack and killing of seven policemen at the Galadimawa Roundabout, Abuja by suspected bandits.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Jimoh Moshood, in a statement in Abuja on Saturday, stated that though five suspects had been nabbed in connection with the killings, there is the need to beef up security throughout the country to enhance and ensure adequate security and protection of lives and properties.
“To this end, the Assistant Inspectors-General of Police in charge of zonal commands and Commissioners of Police in State Commands are under the strict instructions of the IG to re-gird their crime prevention and control strategies.
“They are to carry out a massive deployment of police personnel and logistics to strengthen security in their areas of responsibility and deal decisively with suspected criminal elements,” the statement explained.
It added that attention would be paid to places of worship, schools, markets, recreation centres and other public spaces to forestall any untoward incident.
The Force stated that the ongoing raids of criminal hideouts and black spots would be sustained throughout the country, adding that show of force exercise and confidence-building patrols would also be carried out.
It pleaded for the support and cooperation of the public to ensure a safer society.
