The Joint Association For Persons with disabilities has called for women inclusion and gender equality for women with disabilities.
In the statement signed by the Women Coordinator, Elizabeth Ishola on the celebration of the International Women’s day on Friday, disclosed that inclusion and equality will strengthen partnerships and contributions.
She said “Disability inclusion allows for women and girls with disabilities to take advantage of the benefits of the same health promotion and prevention activities experienced by people who do not have disability”.
“To promote disability inclusion and gender equality, include establishing and strengthening partnerships and contributions to amplifying the voices of women and girls with disabilities”.
“Women and girls with disabilities face increased challenges and barriers due to gender and disability discrimination. Multiple barriers include access to employment, health care, education and financial independence which can lead to lower economic and social status”.
“Women and girls with disabilities also face increased risk of violence, exploitation and abuse. There is a lack of data on disability prevalence and experience among gender and sexual minorities including women and girls with disabilities in everyday activities and encouraging them to have roles similar to their peers who do not have a disability is disability inclusion”.
“This involves more than simply encouraging people; it requires making sure that adequate policies and practices are in place in a community or organization.”
However, She called for support from individuals, communities and Government to assist women in challenges they face in the society.
Ishola also stated that Women with Disabilities empowerment and the promotion of gender equality are essential for the development of a just and equitable society.
“Empowering women leads to improved health outcomes, increased economic growth, and poverty reduction”, she said.
