Arsenal’s hope of winning first premier league in about 20 years on Sunday suffered a huge blow as they surrendered to a humiliating defeat to Aston Villa at Emirates stadium.

The Gunners, who started the well second on the log behind Manchester City, needed a win to return to the summit. But they suffered sixth defeat of the season and first in the year 2024.

The game was still level till 84th minute when Gabriel, Tokehiru Tomiyasu and goalkeeper David Raya failed to clear Olie Watkins cross. The cross found Leon Bailey who shot into an empty net.

The collapse of the Mikel Arteta’s was completed just above two minutes later when Watkins ran from his own half to go and score his 19th premier league goal of the season.

Arsenal dominated the first half and were supposed to be leading only for their wastefulness and lack of accuracy in front of goal.

The defeat mean both Arsenal and their title challengers, Liverpool failed to record a win this week, paving way for City to maintain their grip to the top of the table.

For the Unai Emery’s side, the win solidified their pursue for Champions league next season.
