Leaders of women across the Niger Delta region have given a one-month ultimatum to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, demanding his resignation from the Senate due to his contentious comments regarding ‘holiday enjoyment’. The women have also threatened to mobilize over a million Niger Delta women for a large-scale protest at the National Assembly on September 26 if their demands are not met.
A few weeks ago, Akpabio had drawn criticism for his statement that funds were provided to senators’ accounts to facilitate their holiday enjoyment. This sparked outrage among Nigerians who criticized the insensitivity of such statements while citizens grapple with economic challenges following the removal of fuel subsidies.
Sheila Tamuno, the National President of the Niger Delta Women League, issued a statement urging Akpabio to resign from his position as Senate President, accusing him of adding insult to the economic difficulties faced by the average Nigerian. The statement also called on fellow senators to either vote Akpabio out or stand up for the masses.
In response, the Niger Delta Women League plans to gather a million women on September 26, 2023, at the gates of the National Assembly to express their concerns and exert pressure for necessary actions.
They emphasize the importance of addressing the economic struggles faced by families and the need for responsible leadership.
