A Senior Magistrates’ Court in Ilorin, on Wednesday, ordered that a student, Olaiya Wasiu, 27, be remanded in prison for stealing two cellphones from his fellow students .

The police charged Wasiu with two counts of criminal conspiracy and armed robbery.

The Senior Magistrate, Mr Abdulrahman Bello, ordered that Wasiu, who resides in Ogidi area of Ilorin, Kwara, be remanded in Oke-Kura Prison yard.

Bello adjourned the case until May 6, for further mention.

Earlier, the Prosecution Counsel, Insp Folorunsho Zacheous, told the court that on April 4, two students, Oladunjoye Olamide and Akinkuotu Jolajesu, both of Al-Hikmah University, Adewole area, Ilorin reported the case at Adewole Division Police station.

Zacheous alleged that the accused, armed with a knife, broke into the complaints’ hostel and stole a Samsung and Techno K7 phones, valued at N95,000.

He told the court that after the robbery, the accused allegedly locked the complainants inside their room and threatened to kill them except their parents, whom he contacted on phone, paid two million Naira ransom.

“The parents of the complainants informed the police at Adewole Division, who swung into action and arrested the accused.

He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 6(B) and 1(2) of robbery and fire arms act.
