Osun State Government has stated that it is working with relevant stakeholders in education sector to ensure that schools across the state are reopened very soon.
The Special Adviser to Governor Gboyega Oyetola on Education, Mr Jamiu Olawumi revealed this in Osogbo while featuring on Insightful Moment with Jare Tiamiyu.
Mr Olawumi stated that the government is laiasing with the Federal Government and COVID-19 taskforce other stakeholders to ensure that schools are reopened only when it’s safe to do so.
He added that the state government will commence disinfection of schools across the state in preparation for eventual reopening.
“The Federal Ministry of Education has given all states guidelines and protocols that must be fulfilled before schools are reopened. We’re working with all stakeholders to ensure we put all measures in place for safe reopening. It’s better to resume late and safe than to resume early and shut down again”, he said.
When asked if the students in Osun State will be participating in the West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, Olawumi said the government will not because of this internal examination of WAEC risk the lives of students.
“WAEC conducts three exams in a year. If reopening of schools is not safe, we won’t risk lives of students. If they miss this exam, they can go and write the next one.
“Even Ghana that is the headquarters of WAEC has not indicated that they will write the exam. Ghana opened two weeks ago but has shut down again. Some people have said candidates can be kitted but even medical professionals with their full kits have been infected by this virus,” Olawumi said.
