There was a palpable tension in Ikire, headquarters of Irewole local government area of Osun state on Monday as gunmen invaded the palace of Akire of Ikire, Oba Olatunde Falabi.
The attack which put the residents into fear occured around 11am in the morning. It was gathered that the engaged the security guards in gun duel.
It was learnt that the youth were protesting non-implementation of the Supreme Court and High Court judgments, which declared that Oba Falabi should not be on the throne.
A source said a few minutes after invading the palace, soldiers stormed the place, but the hoodlums hurled stones at them.
The source said the action made the soldiers to reinforce to the scene to salvage the situation.
It was gathered that the gunmen shot at the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) stationed in front of the palace.
Contacted on the phone, the Chairman of Irewole Local Government, Prince Remilekun Abass, told The Nation that the attack was not related to #EndSARS protest or looting of COVID-19 palliatives, but was an obaship tussle.
Police spokesperson Mrs. Yemisi Opalola confirmed the incident. She said there was no casualty.
“Our Armoured Personnel Carrier was shot by hoodlums during the attack. Security operatives have rescued the traditional ruler.
“Peace has been restored to the community, as security operatives are on ground to maintain law and order,” Opalola said.
