The Speaker of Gombe state house of assembly, Hon. Abubakar Ibrahim, has been impeached by the lawmakers.

Ibrahim was impeached on Tuesday after a vote by 16 out of the 24 members of the house.

The motion for the removal of Ibrahim was moved by Shuaibu Haruna, member representing Kwami state constituency.

The removed speaker was replaced by Abubakar Luggerewo who is the seventh speaker of the assembly and from Akko central constituency.

Luggerewo was sworn-in by Siddi Buba, the deputy speaker.

The house also removed Samuel Markus, the majority leader from Pero-Chongi constituency, and replaced him with Yerima Gaule member representing Kaltungo east.

Yahaya Kaka, the deputy chief whip, was also removed and replaced with Saidu Mohammed.

The house dissolved all its standing committees.

But the assembly did not give any reason for the removal of the speaker.

Speaking with journalists, Musa Buba, the chief whip, said members of the house no longer have “confidence and trust” in the sacked speaker.

“The former speaker lacked the trust of the members and in a number of times he went contrary to the provisions of our guiding principles,” Buba said.

Luggerewo, the new speaker while addressing journalists, appreciated the members of the house, saying the action was for the “best interest of our constituents and Gombe state at large”.

“We took the action to ensure that all the needs of citizens of Gombe state have been delivered,” he said. (The Cable)
