The Field Commander of Amotekun Corps in Osun, Amitolu Shittu has debunked a statement credited to him that the corps will be checkmating indecent dressing when it’s fully in operation.

This is as the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission assured the general public that the Corps was not set up to address trivial issues outside the law establishing it.

Shittu in a statement he personally signed on Friday said the report of the media organization that reported the story twisted an interview he granted during a function in Ilesha, Osun State.

“Whoever might have been the mastermind of the sensational news story must know that as a leading Rights Activist with over 30years record in human rights and democratic movement, I can never lead a security organization that will violate human dignity in defence of our people.

“Moreover, as a man whose conviction on the rule of law is unquestionable, I can not willfully violate the extant law and guideline that created the Amotekun Corps, with its mandates clearly stated in the Amotekun Law, as passed by the State of Osun House of Assembly.

And finally as a well travelled human rights crusader that have transverses all the continent of the world in pursuit of human rights can not reduced a security mission to protect our state to a petty approach to indecent dressing.

I therefore will like to state clearly that the report was not only misleading, but a failed attempt to paint Amotekun Corps black in the face of our people.

“I never said that, I won’t ever say such and I seek all genuine patriots to support Amotekun Corps for a secured region, as security by all will act as a shield for all.”

In a statement on its website, the DAWN Commission said it would not tolerate any abuse or violation of rights of the residents of the region by the Corps.

The Commission said, The function and responsibility of AMOTEKUN Corps in the States of Southwest Nigeria has been properly codified and enshrined in the legal framework setting up the Security Outfit.

The security outfit is expected to work within the limit of the law and any violation of the fundamental human rights of citizens is frowned upon.

The creative expression, culture and language of people living in Southwest Nigeria are beyond the scope of the security functions of AMOTEKUN.

The outfit was setup as a complimentary structure to the Statutory Security Agencies to guarantee freedom of expression, protection of lives and property, and by extension, the prosperity of Southwest Nigeria.

Any abuse or violation of any citizen living within the Region by any member of the AMOTEKUN Corps will not be tolerated by the relevant authorities in the States.
