At least a person has reportedly died while several others were left injured following the renewed protest by members of the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria aka Shi’ites on Tuesday.

The protesters and officials of the Nigeria Police Force clashed in Abuja during the protest.

The protest kicked off at the National Human Rights Commission junction in the Maitama area of Abuja, with members of the group chanting anti-government songs to demand the release of their leader, Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, and his wife, Zeenat, from the Kaduna Correctional Centre.

El-Zakzaky and his wife were arrested in December 2015 after members of the movement clashed with the Nigerian Army in Zaria, Kaduna state.

Sahara Reporters reports that the police officers fired teargas to disperse the crowd and afterwards allegedly fired live bullets that killed one of the protesters.

Shiites and security agents have history of clashes in the nation’s capital.
