Police in Osun State have picked up the Osun State acting Chairman of the Social Democratic Party, SDP, Elder Femi Awe during a programme in Osogbo, the State capital.
Elder Awe was arrested by two police officers in uniform during a special prayer at BCJ in Osogbo. He was ferried away in a black unregistered Lexus jeep.
Speaking with journalists, the State Secretary of the party, Azeez Musbau said members of the party are surprised by the development, stating that they have informed the Police Command, the Department of State Security and the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps of their Programme.
“We’re surprised by this development as we duly informed the police, DSS and NSCDC via letters. And today also, the DPO of Dugbe Police station has invited us for interrogation in which we explained everything to him and showed us the acknowledgement letters. So we are still surprised by the development.” Musbau said.
“The officers informed us that the Commissioner of Police invited our Chairman and for over an hour now, he has not been released. He’s still with them as we speak.”
Speaking on the motive behind the programme, Musbau said members of the party have been on special fasting and prayer in the last three day and they gathered in Osogbo for the grand finale of the special prayer.
He said the prayer was to seek God’s favour to restore the lost glory of their party in Osun State and for peace to return to Nigeria.
He added that the defections of Senator Iyiola Omisore has nothing to do with the party, stating that Omisore joined the party and left.
“Omisore did not register the party. He joined us to pursue his governorship ambition and after we saw that his aim was to hijack the party, we initiated court case against him. So his eventual defection doesn’t meet us unaware.”
