Following the crisis that trailed the death of Goodluck Oviekeme, who died in police custody on Saturday, some men in the early hours of Sunday stormed the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) mortuary in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State to cart away the corpse of Goodluck Oviekeme.

Late Oviekeme, who was arrested on Tuesday by the men of the Bayelsa State Police Command in connection with the attack on a patrol team where an officer was fatally injured and his rifle carted away, developed a high temperature and died on Saturday, according to the Police.

His demise has caused serious protest in Yenagoa, the capital city, while the deceased family accused the police of killing an innocent person.

It was gathered that at about 12am on Sunday, mortuary attendants at the Federal Medical Center alerted the men of the Operation Puff Adder and operatives of the Anti-cultism squad of the Police on the strange request of some youths to see the corpse.

When they were asked what they wanted to do with the corpse, they said they want to upset the hospital bills.

The spokesman of the Bayelsa State Police Command, SP Asinim Butswat, who confirmed the incident, said the attempt was foiled by vigilant officers on duty.

According to him, “At about midnight on Saturday, there was an attempt to steal the corpse of the deceased but it was foiled by vigilant security men.” (Daily Trust)
