As every 8th March marks International women’s day celebration all over the world, governments at every level have been advised to prioritize welfare of Women and girl child for a rapid national development.

A Non-governmental organization in Osun State, Women and Development Movement (WADEM) in partnership with Benber Foundation, made this call on Monday in Osogbo while cerebrating this year’s International Women’s Day.

The program which was attended by both young and old females in the State of Osun and also, people with disabilities, took place at the Foundation Hall in Osogbo, the State capital.

The Executive Director of WADEM, Mrs Funmi Abokede lamented bitterly the rejection of the gender equality bill by the national assembly, calling on all women to be united in the demand for what rightfully belong to them. She emphasized the importance of gender equality today is an instrument for a sustainable tomorrow.

Abokede said, “Women can do better. We have the capabilities and capacity to take this country to an enviable height. We need a level playing field and right policies to help showcase our skills. The gender equality bill is an instrument for a better nation for women and I’m calling on all women to come together to demand for our rights. We deserve to be treated good.

“Also, Nigerian women must come together to support one another. We can hold any position if we support ourselves. This is why we have come here today to celebrate ourselves and lecture one another on the importance of today.”

While speaking on the essence of Gender equality for a sustainable tomorrow, the host,used the medium to summon the government and top authorities to restore gender equality among females. “We are appealing to Nigeria and authorities to help us promote equality among male and female. The Nation Assembly should pass the bill for the betterment of every Nigerian woman”, she said.

One of the participants who spoke with InsightMedia, Mr Adebayo Muritala admonished the policy makers to always make Nigerian women priority. He described women as nation builders.

“If you look at my artwork, you’ll notice I really appreciate women a lot and everything that concerns them. If Government can at least render assistance to women and people with disabilities,I am 70% sure this country will move forward”, Mr Adebayo said.

Mrs Lateef Babalola, who was present at the program emphasized further on the quality and essence of women being in the authority. During an interview with InsightMedia, she spoke passionately on how women with disabilities can also add value to the society and government shouldn’t overlook that fact.

“Women are always excluded in partaking in both federal and state levels matters, especially the ones with disabilities like me. Most of us are educated, we’re learned in education and hand skills. We’re using today to remind government not to forget women. I am also the woman leader of my community”, Babalola said.

Participants also used the avenue to pray for Osun State and Nigeria at large.
