On Tuesday, Justice Muslim Hassan of the Ibadan Division of the Court of Appeal in Oyo State revoked the N20 billion in exemplary and aggravating damages that had been granted to Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, also known as Sunday Igboho, against the Department of State Security. The court also overturned the decision that ruled the DSS’s award of damages for the attack on Igboho’s home unconstitutional, calling it obscene. In his decision, Justice Hassan ruled that the Oyo State High Court disregarded the legal justifications for exercising jurisdiction over the case and that the judge shouldn’t have chosen the number of damages to be awarded based only on his personal preferences.
