The Armed Forces has assured there is no need for apprehension about the nation’s democracy, saying it has come to stay.

Chief of Defense Staff, General Lucky Irabor, who gave the assurance when asked if Nigerians could be assured that Nigeria would never see military rule again, also assured that the military would be on hand to assist the police, if such need arises during the forthcoming general elections.

Irabor spoke to journalists at the National Arcade, Abuja at the end of this year’s Armed Forces Remembrance Day Celebration attended by President Muhammadu Buhari and other senior government officials.

Irabor said; “Well, I mean, democracy has come to stay; government of the people, by the people and for the people, in Nigeria has come to stay. That is an assurance and then of course for the elections. I’m sure you know, that the police is on the lead.

“I have been discussing with the IG and of course, we’ve also made contingencies should we be required to give support to the police as the election is conducted? I think for Nigerians you are rest assured that the armed forces remain solidly behind the police to be able to give them all the support as required,” he stated.

Speaking about the significance of the event to the officers and men of the Armed Forces, including the ex-servicemen, the military chief said it stands as a moral booster to the military community, as it would be seen as a way of their works and efforts being appreciated by the nation they serve.
