The President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan, has emerged victorious in the Senatorial election for Yobe North, in Yobe State, by a landslide, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). The APC candidate won with a total of 91,318 votes, representing 74.7 percent of the valid votes cast, while his closest rival, Bello Ilu of the PDP, got 22,849 votes.

This victory marks the seventh consecutive parliamentary election win by Mr. Lawan into the National Assembly since 1999, with the first two giving him a ticket to the House of Representatives and the last five to the Senate.

However, Mr. Lawan’s candidacy had been controversial as he initially contested the presidential primary but lost to Bola Tinubu. He then joined the senatorial race, which had already nominated Bashir Machina as its candidate. The APC later conducted a fresh primary to accommodate Mr. Lawan and submitted his name to INEC as its candidate for the senatorial zone.

The battle over the ticket went all the way to Nigeria’s Supreme Court, which resolved it in favour of Mr. Lawan, allowing him to emerge victorious in the senatorial election
