On March 24, 2023, Rahul Gandhi, the main opposition leader in India, was disqualified as a member of parliament by the Lok Sabha, the lower house of the Indian Parliament. This decision came a day after a Gujarat court convicted and sentenced Gandhi to two years in jail in a defamation case.

The parliament issued a notice stating that Gandhi “stands disqualified from the member of Lok Sabha from the date of his conviction.” Gandhi represented the Wayanad constituency in the southern state of Kerala.

This disqualification marks a significant blow to Gandhi’s political career and the Indian National Congress party, which he leads. It also raises questions about the future of the opposition in Indian politics and the balance of power in parliament.
