Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, has denied allegations that he launched a fresh plot against the President-elect, Mr. Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The allegations were made in a news story published in today’s edition of The Nation newspaper.
According to a statement signed by the Acting Director of Corporate Communications, CBN, Mr. Isa Abdulmumin, Emefiele described the news story as fake and malicious. He said that he does not know and has never met or spoken with Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, who the story alleged had received money from him ahead of the March 18, 2023, gubernatorial poll.
Emefiele also reiterated that he does not take part in politics and urged anyone with contrary information to provide evidence to prove him wrong. He called on members of the public to disregard the false news story and allow him and his team at the CBN to focus on their assigned job of achieving the statutory mandate of the Bank.
This development is coming on the heels of recent reports of heightened political tensions ahead of the March 18 gubernatorial poll in some states in Nigeria. The CBN Governor’s denial of involvement in any plot against the President-elect is expected to help calm tensions and restore confidence in the financial sector.
