President Muhammadu Buhari and the security services have been requested to look into Justice Kayode Ariwoola’s recent trip to the UK for a covert meeting with President-elect Bola Tinubu, according to the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP).

It was widely reported that Ariwoola was traveling to the UK where he intended to meet with Tinubu to talk about issues pertaining to the ongoing legal proceedings resulting from the presidential election on February 25.

The news had highlighted Mr. Ariwoola’s history of political misconduct, including his questioning by the State Security Service (SSS) regarding remarks he made in support of the G-5 governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), some of whom supported Tinubu during the election.

The apex court’s reputation continues to deteriorate due to Ariwoola’s improper political posturing and recent events, raising more concerns about its capacity to oversee the on-going political and electoral litigations.

Recent pronouncements by the court have been questioned, according to a statement over the weekend from its secretary, Willy Ezugwu. In the interest of justice and national security, it is necessary to put the controversy to rest through an investigation.

The statement read, “The Supreme Court under the current leadership has given several rulings on political cases in recent times which call into question the integrity of the apex court before this very damaging report by an online news portal on the alleged planned meeting between the CJN and the President-elect in London.”

It added, “The CNPP, therefore, calls on President Muhammadu Buhari, security agencies, and all relevant stakeholders to institute an open investigation into the reported planned meeting between CJN Ariwoola and President-elect Tinubu to lay to rest the controversy in the interest of justice and national security.”
