The 2023 presidential election in Nigeria has been met with controversy and allegations of misconduct, with the Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and the People’s Democratic Party heading to court to challenge the results. As the country waits for the outcome of the legal proceedings, Dr. Paul Enenche, the senior Pastor of Dunamis International Gospel Centre, has called for transparency and fairness from the judiciary.
Dr. Enenche highlighted the recent example of Malawi, where a similar scenario occurred in the 2019 presidential election. The incumbent president rigged the election and was declared the winner, leading to widespread national dissatisfaction and allegations of electoral fraud. However, the constitutional court nullified the election due to evidence of rigging, irregularities, and malpractices in favor of the incumbent president, calling for a rerun.
The Supreme Court upheld the constitutional court’s ruling and called for a rerun, which resulted in the actual winner of the previously rigged election emerging victorious. Dr. Enenche praised the Malawian judiciary for upholding justice and ensuring that the popular will of the people prevailed over the selfish interests of the party and government in power.
Dr. Enenche urged the Nigerian judiciary to follow the example of Malawi and remain the last hope of the common man. He called on the judiciary to save Nigeria and set it on a path of electoral justice, peace, and development. He emphasized that the judiciary has the choice to either compromise its values or consolidate on justice, and urged it to tread the path of probity and honor.
As the country awaits the outcome of the legal proceedings, Dr. Enenche’s call for transparency and fairness from the judiciary is a reminder that the judiciary is an essential pillar of democracy and must remain independent and impartial.
