Prince Harry has announced his willingness to testify in court against News Group Newspapers in his phone-hacking case. During a pre-trial hearing, Harry said he believed he was at risk of being physically attacked due to the stories being published about him in the media, including depictions of him as a “thick”, “cheat”, “underage drinker”, and “irresponsible drug taker.”
He accuses the press of creating a “stalemate society” where they “enrage the public over the most mundane and petty things, to distract from the critical issues for our country and communities.”
Harry’s statement illustrates his determination to pursue the matter and labels News Group Newspapers’ behavior as “utterly vile”, “disgusting, immoral, and a complete abuse of power.”
This court case threatens to further strain Harry’s relationship with the Royal Family as he accused his father of wanting to keep the tabloids “onside”.
The case also unveiled that Harry’s brother Prince William had privately settled a hacking claim, which News Group Newspapers attempted to use against Harry’s claims.
