Some Nigerians on Tuesday stormed the major streets around a Lagos State Magistrate Court to demand the immediate release of Afrobeat singer, Seun Kuti, who has been detained by the Nigerian police.
The protesters were seen in front of the Yaba Magistrate Court, where the Nigerian Police Force had arraigned Kuti after he was arrested for assaulting an officer.
In a video obtained by SaharaReporters, the protesters were seen displaying a series of placards which read several statements against police brutality in the country.
“The police uniform has become a symbol of oppression,” one of the banners read.
One of the protesters was heard declaring that the Nigerian police had no justifiable cause to detain Seun in custody after he had answered all of the questions posed to him.
“In every situation, it is a two parties’ situation for instance. You hear one side of the party, and hear the second time of the story. Seun Kuti has already given his own side of the story. He has been held in detention for over two days. Two days first, then it was increased to four days. The point is this, this man tendered himself voluntarily. He said he is ready to cooperate with you on the conduct of your investigation. He has answered every question possible. What should happen next is allow this man go home. Let him organise his defence team,” he said.
SaharaReporters earlier reported the #FreeSeunKuti campaign asked the Nigeria Police Force to drop trumped-up charges against the Nigeria singer, Seun Kuti, and release him from detention as he had met his bail conditions.
The campaign is supported by the African Action Congress (AAC), the Youth Rights Campaign (YRC), the Movement of the People (MOP), the Socialist Equality Movement (SEM), the Movement for African Emancipation (MAE), Workers and Youth Solidarity Network (WYSN) as well as other individuals.
The campaign made the demand in a statement released by social activist, Francis Nwapa, in which he called on Nigerian youths, workers and the general public to join in the #FreeSeunKuti campaign and the court sitting on May 23, 2023 at the Magistrate Court at Yaba, Lagos State.
