US President Joe Biden stumbled and fell while distributing diplomas at a graduation ceremony for the US Air Force Academy in Colorado. Despite being the nation’s oldest serving president at 80, Biden appeared to be unhurt and was helped back to his feet. The incident occurred after the president had been standing for over an hour to shake hands with each of the 921 graduating cadets. Critics, citing his age, have raised concerns about Biden’s ability to run for a second term, and this fall may add to those worries.

Footage of the incident shows Biden pointing at a sandbag used to prop up his teleprompter just before he fell. He was assisted by an Air Force official and members of his Secret Service detail and later walked back to his seat unassisted. Former President Donald Trump, a potential opponent in the 2024 election, expressed concern for Biden’s well-being while also poking fun at his age. Biden’s fall comes after previous stumbling incidents, including a fall from his bicycle and a misstep on the Air Force One stairs.

The White House communications director assured the public that Biden was fine after the fall. Despite recent polls indicating that a majority of US voters are concerned about his advanced age, Biden’s last physical examination in February confirmed his fitness for duty. While the incident may fuel debates about his physical capabilities, it is not uncommon for presidents to stumble in front of the cameras. President Barack Obama and President Gerald Ford have also had similar moments in the past.
