In response to rising security concerns in the country, the police are gearing up to reintroduce permits for vehicles with tinted windows nationwide.

The decision comes as incidents involving tinted glass-equipped vehicles, particularly those by young individuals, have become unacceptable, according to the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi.

During an interview on Wednesday, Adejobi disclosed that some states had reported instances of crimes committed using such vehicles, prompting the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, to establish a committee to review the situation. Once the committee completes its work and submits its report, a decision regarding the reintroduction of tinted glass permits will be made.

Previously, on March 20, 2022, the police had suspended the issuance of tinted permits under the former IG, Usman Baba. However, they maintained the right to stop and search vehicles with tinted glass without demanding permits, aiming to reduce harassment incidents.

Despite the initial relief this suspension brought to many Nigerians, Adejobi emphasized that the permit may be reinstated to combat crime effectively. He explained, “The Inspector-General of Police has set up a committee to review it because it is a matter of law. Many youths have started using tinted glass to commit crimes, and various states are complaining. When the committee submits its report, we are going to act appropriately.”

Regarding other related issues, such as covered number plates, revolving lights, and unregistered vehicles, the committee aims to develop lasting solutions to address these problems.

Furthermore, Adejobi addressed the issue of police escort for VIPs, highlighting the need to regulate its deployment, ensuring that only those entitled to such protection receive it in accordance with the law. The police are also collaborating with private security companies, ensuring responsible and lawful provision of security services.(Punch)
