Samuel Eto’o, the president of the Cameroonian Football Federation (Fecafoot), is refuting allegations of legal proceedings against him, as claimed by widespread media reports. Lawyers from French law firm Vey & Associes issued a statement dismissing these allegations as “calumnious rumors.” They assert that Eto’o has not been officially notified of any judicial action or received any summons.
While initial reports suggested that Eto’o was facing action related to match-fixing allegations, a Cameroonian police document cited “abuse of authority, corruption,” and other unspecified claims. The authenticity of these police reports, based on a redacted image of an official document, remains unconfirmed by Cameroonian authorities, according to the BBC.
This controversy is not the first time Eto’o’s Fecafoot presidency has faced scrutiny. Recently, a group of Cameroonian football officials sent an open letter to FIFA, alleging that the organization had remained silent on allegations against Eto’o despite numerous complaints. The letter also accused FIFA of a “two-speed management” system between Africa and Europe.
In response to the letter, Vey & Associes defended Eto’o’s presidency, stating that he was implementing reforms to reorganize Cameroonian football leadership and had the support of the “vast majority of stakeholders.” They labeled the letter as “harmful” and “defamatory,” suggesting that Eto’o’s reforms were encountering resistance from individuals benefiting from corruption.
In July, a group representing amateur clubs in Cameroon called on Eto’o to resign, citing “grave irregularities” within Fecafoot. In August, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) initiated an investigation into allegations of improper conduct against Eto’o, emphasizing his presumption of innocence until proven otherwise by an appropriate judicial body.
