Veteran comedian, Okechukwu Anthony Onyegbule aka Okey Bakassi has revealed how he was approached in Nigeria and abroad to peddle drugs.
In a deep and sincere interview on Channels TV, Bakassi opened up about the disturbing experiences he faced both in Nigeria and abroad.
He revealed that he had been approached by fraudsters and drug dealers who gave him invitations for him to join their illicit trade.
These invitations, he revealed, became even more frequent after he made the move to Lagos State in Nigeria.
The comedian shared that individuals in the entertainment industry are most often seen as easy targets for such offers.
He exposed the vulnerabilities that a lot of entertainers face in their hunger for fame and success while he acknowledged that there were financial rewards associated with drug peddling.
Bakassi disclosed that he declined these offers, opting to maintain to “keep things simple”, instead.
However, he revealed that he did not yield to these temptations, recognizing the dangers and consequences of following such a path.
He expressed his desire to lead a life that allows him to sleep soundly at night, not scared and burdened by fear of law enforcement agencies.
Bakassi stated: “When I came to Lagos as a young man, I was tempted by different people in so many ways. And I’m talking about fraudsters and drug dealers.
“I was approached. When you are in entertainment, you will be approached to peddle drugs. I have been approached overseas, I have been approached in Nigeria by drug dealers.
“They will just show up in your hotel and talk business. They will tell you about other people who are doing it and making money. But it is dangerous.
“For me, I want to be able to sleep well without being afraid of the police or any law enforcement agencies. So I have tried from day one to keep things simple and be happy.”
He also recalled that back in 2017, he had boldly revealed that “70 percent of Nigerian celebrities” were consumers of illicit drugs.
While acknowledging his own experimentation with drugs during his younger years, he emphasised that entertainers often resort to drug use as a means to enhance their creativity.
