The Nigeria Labour Congress and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria have issued a directive to their members to commence a nationwide strike over the assault on NLC President, Joe Ajaero, starting from midnight, Tuesday 14, November.
The organised Labour said all affiliate unions of the two labour centres have been directed to implement the resolutions of the joint National Executive Council of TUC and NLC.
President of TUC, Festus Osifo, who addressed reporters on Monday, said the strike would remain until “governments at all levels wake up to their responsibility.”
They had on November 7, resolved to declare a nationwide strike by Tuesday, November 14, if their demands were not met.
It would be recalled that the unions have been irked by the beating received by the NLC President, Joe Ajaero in Imo State about two weeks ago.
The attackers smashed the union vehicles, inflicted injuries on Ajaero and others, and dispossessed them of handsets, money, ATM cards among other valuables. Tnr Labour leaders and others were gathered at the NLC State secretariat to begin a scheduled protest on November 1, over pending Labour issues.
The NLC President, other national leaders of NLC and their TUC, counterparts, were at the NLC state Secretariat in Owerri to protest among other grievances backlog of unpaid salaries and allowances, Pensions, gratuities and non-compliance with the National Minimum Wage Act.
The attack, brutalization and battering of Ajaero and others have continued to elicit outrage and condemnation across the country and beyond.
