World Institute for Peace, a non governmental group has announced its withdrawal from the planned national protests scheduled to commence tomorrow.
At press conference was held on Wednesday at the NUJ secretariat in Osogbo, on Wednesday the group announced withdrawal, stating that the decision was in the interest of the State.
The Chairman WIP, Chief Lamina Kamiludeen Omotoyosi stated that they remain committed to human rights as outlined in the Nigerian Constitution, African Charter, and UN Declaration. However, they oppose protests that could worsen economic challenges and hunger.
The group said it has been engaging with security agencies and traditional rulers in Osun State to address potential risks and advocate for peace.
“This troubling Security Alert activated by these world powers should draw the keen attention of every Nigerian patriot, particularly at this important period of our national life when we are struggling hard to attract investors to key sectors of our economy like oil sector, power sector; infrastructure, information and communication technology sectors, for financial growth and job creation for teeming youths.
“We support peaceful and lawful protests aimed at compelling the government to address critical economic issues, including inflation and high fuel prices.
“However, we oppose any protests calling for the disintegration of Nigeria or the elimination of the constitution. Instead, we demand urgent government action to establish local refineries to alleviate fuel prices and tackle inflation.
The group also calls on state governors to do more for the people in their respective states
“We also challenge the state Governors, particularly the Osun State Government led by Governor Ademola Nurudeen Ademola Jackson to justify the over N50billion grants and over N200billion federal allocations accrued to the state in the last one year as well as for palliatives received from federal government just as he should enumerate to the people of Osun the state government’s plans and efforts to improve food production.
“We oppose any violent, ethnically, or politically motivated protests and advocate for dialogue to resolve economic crises. They advise citizens to remain vigilant against potential violence and property destructions.”
