Youths in Osun State have called on the State Government to support the advancement of technology through supports to youths in the sector.

The young people made the call at an engagement to mark the 2024 International Youth Day organized by the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Osun State Chapter, in collaboration with Insights Initiative for Community and Social Development.

Speaking on this year’s theme, “From Clicks to Progress: Youth Digital Pathways for Sustainable Development”, participants emphasized the support of the government as a key factor towards engaging more youths in the sector.

The meeting which was held on Monday, brought together youth leaders, technology enthusiasts, and youths across the state to discuss the critical role of technology in youth empowerment and sustainable development.

The speakers at the event highlighted the need for creating an enabling environment for young people to thrive in the digital age. It was noted that Nigeria, using the Olympics as an example, might be lagging in technology which has impacted the country in different ways.

Leading the discussion, Segun Solomon, the founder of Madros Technology pointed out that capacity development is a key strategy for bringing more youths into the tech ecosystem.

He emphasized on building talents and reducing reliance on external help by fostering reliable sources of funding and partnerships within the community.

“Government at the State level has a role to play. But we have not been able to get that support. At our establishment, we have tried to bring the government on board but failed. We need to get more people engaged in tech and partnership with stakeholders will help achieve this.”

Damilare Adeboye, a development enthusiast called for consistency in youth development efforts and the need for team spirit and collaboration, while urging less competition.

He urged the youth not to see themselves as a threat to power but as partners in progress, he called for a united front that could benefit future generations.

Ajala Adetunji, the Chairman of NYCN Osun State, emphasized the potential of Osun State to become the tech hub of the country. He pointed out that the potential within the youths, particularly in the tech space which could be a great tool for the state’s economy.

“Our greatest weapon is human capacity, and going forward, we will delve deeper into the tech industry,” Adetunji said.

The Executive Director of Insight Initiative, Jare Tiamiyu urged the youths to build potential and seek personal development, while calling on the Osun government to do more investments into the young people.

“Youths must ensure that they build their CV and seek personal development. We must also call on Osun government to invest in youths. We have not seen enough. The incoming Imole Youths Corps should be more tech-driven and should not just be about sweeping of streets and other unsustainable assignments. We must move with the speed of light.”
