Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has lamented the tendency of Africans to forget their past leaders, despite their significant contributions to the development of their countries. He made this statement at an event in Lagos, Nigeria, organized by the Angolan community to commemorate Angola’s National Founder and Hero’s Day.

Obasanjo spoke on the topic “Pan-Africanism in the Political Course of Agostinho Neto,” highlighting the importance of economic freedom for Africa after achieving political independence. He also expressed concern that pan-Africanism, which started as an ideology, has become a political movement that neglects the continent’s economic issues.

The event was held to honor the birth of Angola’s first President, Dr. Agostinho Neto, who played a crucial role in securing Angola’s independence from Portugal. Neto was born on September 17, 1922, and his birthday is celebrated annually on September 17.

In his address, Obasanjo emphasized the need for Africans to recognize and appreciate the contributions of their past leaders. He said that pan-Africanism has become too focused on politics and solidarity, rather than addressing economic challenges.

Angola’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. José Bamóquina Zau, also spoke at the event, urging the new generation of Africans to adopt the pan-Africanist ideology championed by Neto and other African heroes. He highlighted the historical connection between Lagos and Neto, who was honored by the University of Lagos in 1970 for his political courage in Angola and Africa.

The ambassador also expressed gratitude for Nigeria’s financial support to Angola’s first government, which enabled it to function properly. He emphasized the importance of remembering Neto’s dream of a free Africa and hoped that the new generation would take note of the essence of his pan-Africanism ideology.
