Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, on Wednesday, officially flagged off the N41 billion upgrade of the Ibadan Airport renamed Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport to international standards.
The ground-breaking ceremony for the project, which was held at the airport premises in Ibadan, the state capital, is expected to be completed within 12 months.
Makinde said his administration has been committed to the upgrade of the airport since 2019, with a clear vision to transform Ibadan into a regional business hub in the South-West region.
He said, “Our focus is on fighting poverty, not the poor. While it is true that times are tough, this project represents a significant investment in our future.”
The governor explained that the initiative would enhance transportation and attract businesses, tourists, and investors to the region.
“Modernizing the airport is essential for connecting the state to the global economy and facilitating economic activities.
“The upgrade of the SLA Airport, which will cost N41 billion, is expected to enhance air travel operations and provide a reliable transportation network for both business and leisure travellers, positioning the state for economic growth and development.”
In his remark, the Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, who was the special guest, described Makinde as a “true actualiser” of development projects.
He expressed his willingness to collaborate with the state to explore mutually beneficial opportunities for both states.
Addressing the audience on behalf of the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, the acting manager of SLA Airport, Francis Balogun, said the project would stimulate the state’s economy, creating jobs and attracting investment.
