The Nigeria Police Force has reiterated its commitment to curbing the misuse of the Inspector-General of Police’s name and office by unscrupulous officers involved in fraudulent activities.
In a statement on Saturday, the Force Public Relations Officer, Muyiwa Adejobi, expressed concern over the actions of some officers that continue to tarnish the reputation of the police and erode public trust.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains deeply concerned about the recurring unprofessional conduct of a few officers, which undermines the standards and credibility of the force,” the statement read.
“Despite repeated warnings and disciplinary measures, some officers persist in engaging in unethical practices that damage public confidence.”
Adejobi specifically condemned the fraudulent use of the Inspector-General’s name to intimidate victims and perpetrate illegal acts.
“These fraudulent tactics aim to mislead victims into believing that the Inspector-General of Police is aware of, or approves, such illegal activities, thereby discouraging them from reporting these incidents,” he noted.
The Force PRO urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any misconduct by police officers to relevant authorities, including state Complaint Response Units or the Commissioner of Police.
“Members of the public are advised to exercise caution when approached by individuals claiming connections with the IGP or other senior officers for undue influence or favors,” Adejobi warned.
This renewed warning follows a similar alert issued in October, urging Nigerians to avoid exploiting the name or office of the Inspector-General of Police for intimidation or fraudulent purposes.
