The Nigerian entertainment industry faced immense grief in 2024, as it bid farewell to several beloved figures. Below are some of the notable personalities we lost.

Baba Olofa Ina

Chief Adedeji Aderemi, popularly known as Baba Olofa Ina, passed away on January 4, 2024, at 73 in his hometown of Ede, Osun State. The veteran Yoruba actor was renowned for his productions like Odetedo, Lakaaye, Kogun Maja, and Ade Oba. A respected figure in Yoruba theatre, he also held the prestigious title of Sobaloju of Edeland.

Sisi Quadri

Sisi Quadri, a Yoruba actor, died at 44 on a Friday in January 2024 at Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso. He was buried in his hometown, Agbowo area of Iwo, Osun State. Despite training as a cloth designer, his passion for acting, introduced by lecturer Toyin Olaiya, led him to a successful career in Yoruba films.

Mr. Ibu

John Ikechukwu Okafor, widely known as Mr. Ibu, died on March 2, 2024, at 62. The legendary comedian and Nollywood actor appeared in over 200 films, including the iconic Mr. Ibu series. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and a leg amputation in late 2023, he succumbed to cardiac arrest at Evercare Hospital in Lagos. His burial took place on June 28, 2024, in his hometown.

Rukayat Gawat

Islamic singer Alhaja Rukayat Gawat-Oyefeso, known for her soulful voice, passed away on September 24, 2024. Daughter of broadcaster Alhaji Rasaq Aremu Gawat, she was a beacon of Islamic music and faith. Her death was announced by cleric Alfa Aribidesi At-Tawadeeh on Facebook.

Amaechi Muonagor

Veteran actor Amaechi Muonagor died on March 24, 2024, at 62 due to kidney failure. Born in Obosi, Anambra State, he graduated in Economics from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, in 1987. Amaechi was revered for his compelling roles in Nollywood.

Onyeka Onwenu

Onyeka Onwenu, the “Elegant Stallion,” died at 72 after a heart attack on March 27, 2024. A singer, actress, and activist, she captivated Nigeria with hits like One Love and You and I, which became iconic Nollywood soundtracks. Her passing drew tributes from across the nation, including President Bola Tinubu, who praised her timeless contributions.

These losses leave an indelible mark on Nigeria’s cultural landscape, reminding us of the enduring legacies of these trailblazers.
