The Ogun State Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport will soon be completed, the state government has said.
According to the Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Ade Akinsanya, the airport would be the best in Nigeria and West Africa.
Speaking during a visit by the League of Airport and Aviation Correspondents, Akinsanya revealed that the airport’s runway was 4km long and 60 metres wide, making it the longest and largest in the region.
“The airport is 95-98 per cent complete. With a total area of 5,000 hectares, we started with 900 hectares for the first phase. In the future, this will also be an aerotropolis, complete with hotels, amusement parks, and cinemas,” Akinsanya said.
According to a statement on Saturday, Akinsaya emphasised that once the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority gives the green light for commercial operations, the airport would begin full-scale operations.
He said the airport currently had approval for chartered flights.
“The runway is already finished, and the fire station is operational. With the addition of a new fire tender, we are moving from class six to class seven,” he added.
The Commissioner for Transportation, Gbenga Dairo, highlighted the airport’s strategic location within a special agricultural processing zone and described it as a key legacy project of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
Also, the Airport Manager, Captain Dapo Olumide, noted that the airport would be the first in Nigeria to operate with an official operating permit, which was a more stringent certification than the Aerodrome Certificate.
