On the occasion of International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD, Representative Bamidele Salam has called for greater inclusion and equal rights for persons with disabilities, urging the government and society to take decisive steps toward creating a more accessible and equitable environment.
Salam, In a statement signed by his media aide, Joshua Afolabi and made available to newsmen on Tuesday, 3rd December, 2024, emphasized the importance of dismantling barriers and ensuring that people with disabilities are fully integrated into the nation’s political, social, and economic structures.
World Disability Day, observed globally on December 3, aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities and promote their rights in all aspects of life.
This year, Representative Salam who represented the people of Ede North, Ede South, Egbedore and Ejigbo federal constituency of Osun state at the National Assembly, used the occasion to reiterate his commitment to advocating for the rights of persons with disabilities, particularly in the realm of governance.
“We are called to celebrate the potential and dignity of people with disabilities. But beyond celebration, today must also serve as a call to action. It is imperative that we work together to create an inclusive society that offers equality, fairness, and opportunity to all, regardless of physical, mental, or sensory limitations,” said Representative Salam in a statement.
“There can be no true democracy without equal participation,” Salam said.
“Our brothers and sisters with disabilities must not only be heard, but actively involved in shaping the laws and policies that impact their lives. It’s time for Nigeria to open its doors wider to accommodate and empower persons with disabilities, ensuring they can take their rightful place in leadership roles.”
Salam’s remarks come as the country continues to face challenges in fully implementing disability-inclusive policies. Despite legislative advancements, many persons with disabilities still encounter significant barriers to voting, holding public office, and engaging in political processes.
In his call to action, the lawmaker who is also the Chairman of House Committee on Public Accounts highlighted the need for disability-friendly reforms, such as accessible voting facilities, financial support for disabled candidates, and broader political engagement with the disability community.
Salam also urged political parties to actively involve individuals with disabilities in their platforms and decision-making processes, ensuring that disability rights are prioritized at all levels of governance.
Beyond politics, Rep. Salam stressed that equality for persons with disabilities must extend to all aspects of society, including education, healthcare, employment, and public services.
He pointed out that while strides have been made in some areas, people with disabilities still face systemic discrimination and social exclusion.
“The right to education, healthcare, and employment should never be determined by physical abilities,” Salam said.
“Persons with disabilities have the same rights as anyone else to live full, meaningful lives. It is crucial that we push for full implementation of the Disability Rights Act and ensure that all institutions, whether public or private are accessible and accommodating to everyone.”
Looking ahead, Representative Salam emphasized the importance of creating a society where disability is not seen as a barrier to success or participation, but as a diversity that enriches the community.
He expressed his determination to continue working towards a future where all Nigerians, regardless of their abilities, have equal access to opportunities and are treated with dignity and respect.
“We must go beyond mere sympathy.”
“It’s time for meaningful action to address the social, economic, and political challenges faced by persons with disabilities. This is not just about the disabled community, it’s about the kind of inclusive society we all want to build,” Salam concluded.
