The Ogun State Police Command has arrested a student-teacher, Adeola Adeyemo, for allegedly causing an accident that led to the loss of an 11-year-old pupil’s right eye.
The victim, Alao Idera, a primary six pupil of Owiwi Nursery and Primary School in the Obada Oko area of the state, was injured in what police described as an accidental incident involving a cane.
Adeyemo, a 400-level student of Tai Solarin University of Education, Ijebu Ode, was undergoing her teaching practice at the school when the accident occurred.
According to the police spokesperson, Omolola Odutola, the incident happened as Adeyemo was preparing for an end-of-year party. She was reportedly holding a cane when Idera rushed toward her, and the cane accidentally struck the child’s right eye.
The injured pupil was immediately taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta, for treatment. Unfortunately, her right eye could not be saved and had to be surgically removed.
Odutola clarified that the teacher did not flog the pupil, nor did the pupil do anything wrong. She described the incident as a tragic accident.
Following the pupil’s surgery and the loss of her eye, Adeyemo reportedly attempted suicide. She was rushed to the hospital, where she received treatment and is now in stable condition.
The state recently witnessed another tragic school incident in October, when a secondary school student, Monday Arijo, died after allegedly being flogged and forced to perform 162 frog jumps by a teacher. The teacher was arrested, and the school was shut down by the state government.
The police are continuing their investigation into the latest incident, while Adeyemo remains in custody.
