Nigerian disc jockey Oluwaforijimi Amu, better known as DJ Jimmy Jatt, has opened up about his health journey, which included losing his sight in 2020 and eventually undergoing a kidney transplant.
In a 2022 interview, the renowned DJ revealed that he successfully had a kidney transplant after battling chronic kidney disease.
Speaking on Rubbin Minds with Ebuka, DJ Jimmy Jatt explained how his health challenges began after he decided to spend more time outside Nigeria, where he had spent most of his life. He admitted that his health issues may have been triggered by his lifestyle choices, sharing that in 2019, he made plans to travel more and explore the world beyond Lagos.
“Maybe I caused it for myself,” he said. “In 2019, I decided I wanted to spend more time outside the country. I had lived in Nigeria all my life, mostly in Lagos, and wanted to explore places like Europe and America.”
However, in 2020, his plans were interrupted by health problems. With travel restrictions in place, he stayed within Nigeria but began experiencing significant health issues.
“I lost my sight and underwent surgery to restore it. Afterward, I felt the need to take a break and follow through with my plan to live abroad,” he recalled.
DJ Jimmy Jatt then moved to the U.S., where he was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease and began dialysis. Eventually, he returned to Nigeria and had a kidney transplant. After the procedure, he took time to recover before leaving Nigeria again.
“While I was away, I continued DJing in the U.S. and Europe, but eventually, I felt it was time to return to Nigeria, so I came back in December,” he said.
He also clarified that lifestyle factors are not always the root cause of kidney disease. He emphasized that he has never smoked and stopped drinking alcohol years ago, revealing that diabetes was the underlying cause of his kidney condition.
