Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has dismissed concerns about Elon Musk’s investments in the country, emphasizing that they align with Italy’s national interests.

Speaking to Corriere della Sera, Meloni stated, “I work to attract major investments to Italy and assess their value through the lens of our national interest.”

Meloni’s relationship with Musk, the world’s richest person, has garnered significant attention.

In September, the billionaire honored Meloni at an event in New York, praising her as “authentic, honest, and truthful — qualities not often associated with politicians.” Meloni returned the admiration, describing Musk as “a genius” who has been unfairly criticized for his political leanings.

Musk’s ventures have extended into Italy’s political and business realms. A recent Bloomberg report highlighted Musk’s involvement in discussions around Italy’s demographic challenges and infrastructure.

He notably urged Italy to address its declining birthrate and criticized Telecom Italia SpA for allegedly impeding the rollout of his company Starlink’s high-speed internet services.

Additionally, Musk and Meloni have explored collaboration opportunities in the space and artificial intelligence sectors. Italy’s updated regulatory framework now allows foreign space companies to operate more freely in the country, paving the way for Musk’s investments.

While Meloni embraces Musk’s ventures, other European leaders have been more critical. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Deputy Robert Habeck recently criticized Musk during their New Year speeches, referencing his support for a far-right party during February’s snap election.

Musk’s close ties to global politics also continue to spark debate. As a key figure in President-elect Donald Trump’s transition team, Musk is set to play a prominent advisory role in the new U.S. administration.

The partnership between Musk and Meloni underscores Italy’s push for foreign investments, even as debates over his political affiliations and influence unfold across Europe.
