Meche Oswald, the Coordinator of the Obidient Youth Ambassadors, has expressed concern over the growing division within the Obidient Movement and the Labour Party (LP) following a controversial tweet from Peter Obi, the 2023 LP Presidential Candidate.
In the tweet, Obi distanced the Obidient Movement from the Labour Party, suggesting that its members were free to align with any political party as they pursued the goal of change in Nigeria.
This statement has triggered fears of further fragmentation within the movement, which had once been a powerful force for change. Oswald criticized Obi for not consulting others before making such remarks, warning that it could encourage defections from the Labour Party. He pointed out that some individuals who left the LP used Obi’s statement as justification for their actions.
Oswald also highlighted the internal struggles within the Obidient Movement, which he believes has weakened over time and is now facing challenges in maintaining relevance. He stressed the importance of unity and clear leadership, noting that Obi’s failure to communicate with key figures, such as Barrister Julius Abure, has contributed to the current disarray.
Oswald said, “After reflecting on the implications of Peter Obi’s statement, I feel compelled to voice my concerns over the potential fallout. I wish he had refrained from making this statement or, at the very least, sought advice before sharing his thoughts.
“Obi has unintentionally created the impression that Obidients can affiliate with any political party, leading to a fragmented movement that undermines our collective purpose.
“Many of the opportunistic individuals who pressured Obi into making that statement have already started joining other parties.
“However, I commend Barrister Julius Abure for his unwavering leadership. Under his vision, the Labour Party is growing stronger.”
