The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd.) has announced that the 150,000 barrels per day (bpd) Port Harcourt Refinery and the Kaduna Refinery are undergoing a comprehensive overhaul to meet global standards.

According to the Chief Corporate Communications Officer of NNPC Ltd., Olufemi Soneye, the ongoing rehabilitation efforts at the refineries represent a significant departure from the traditional Turnaround Maintenance (TAM) approach. This new strategy is designed to achieve world-class operational efficiency.

The statement, released on Thursday, was in response to former President Olusegun Obasanjo’s remarks questioning the viability of the 60,000 bpd Port Harcourt Refinery and Warri Refinery following their rehabilitation.

Obasanjo had previously cited concerns raised by Shell Petroleum Development Company (SPDC) about the Port Harcourt Refinery’s operational potential and accused the NNPC Ltd. of misleading the public about the refineries’ status.

Addressing these concerns, Soneye highlighted the substantial progress made in overhauling the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries while similar efforts are underway at the second Port Harcourt facility and the Kaduna Refinery.

He emphasized NNPC Ltd.’s dedication to upgrading and maintaining these assets for sustainable operations aligned with international benchmarks.

Soneye also extended an invitation to Obasanjo to visit the rehabilitated refineries to witness the improvements firsthand.

“We value the wisdom and experience of our esteemed former president and welcome his insights and guidance. President Olusegun Obasanjo remains a highly respected statesman who has significantly contributed to Nigeria’s development,” Soneye said.

Soneye further underscored NNPC Ltd.’s transformation into a profit-driven, globally competitive energy company. The organization has expanded its focus beyond oil and gas to include cleaner, cheaper, and more sustainable energy solutions to meet Nigeria’s evolving energy demands.

He attributed this progress to the leadership of NNPC Ltd.’s board and management team, led by Group CEO Mele Kyari, as well as the transformative policies introduced by President Bola Tinubu in the energy sector.

“NNPC Ltd. is committed to driving energy solutions that align with global standards while addressing Nigeria’s growing energy needs,” Soneye concluded.

This marks a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector, highlighting NNPC Ltd.’s dedication to long-term growth and sustainability.
