The Labour Party (LP) has expressed confidence in its ability to win the 2027 presidential election without forming a coalition.

The party emphasized its strong grassroots support and the trust it has earned among Nigerians, reaffirming its readiness to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) independently.

Obiora Ifoh, the LP National Publicity Secretary, dismissed rumours of ongoing coalition talks with the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) or the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking during an interview, Ifoh stressed that the party has neither been invited nor approached for discussions about any potential merger.

“As it stands, the Labour Party has not been part of any meeting to discuss a coalition. What we see is that Nigerians are already exploring alternatives for a decisive win against the APC,” Ifoh said.

Ifoh highlighted LP’s remarkable performance in the 2023 elections as evidence of its strength and appeal. He noted that millions of Nigerians had supported the party without any coalition, a feat he believes the party can surpass in 2027.

“Labour Party didn’t need a coalition in 2023 when millions of Nigerians voted for us to lead the nation. The government of the day has failed to meet expectations, and what Labour Party stood for in 2023 remains what Nigeria needs now. If elections were held today, Labour Party would achieve an even greater victory,” he added.

Ifoh reiterated that LP has the capacity to win elections at the highest level and remains a formidable force in Nigerian politics.

While affirming LP’s independent strength, Ifoh stated that the party remains open to coalition talks if approached with favorable terms.

“The idea of a coalition is not bad. If approached, Labour Party will carefully evaluate the merits and demerits of such a proposal,” he explained.

However, he clarified that no formal talks have occurred, adding, “What we hear are individuals speculating about mergers. No opposition party has initiated formal discussions yet.”

The statements came in response to speculation about a possible merger involving LP, PDP, and NNPP ahead of the 2027 elections. Both Peter Obi, LP’s 2023 presidential candidate, and Rabiu Kwankwaso of NNPP have denied any involvement in coalition talks.

In a recent interview, Kwankwaso stated, “I have not communicated with either Atiku or Obi,” reaffirming his neutrality. Similarly, Obi distanced himself from the speculation, saying, “I am not a party to any coalition arrangement.”

In contrast, the PDP’s acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, emphasized that a merger involving PDP is essential for defeating the APC in 2027.

Damagum argued, “The PDP has consistently won elections without being in power. No coalition without the PDP can successfully challenge the APC.”

He further criticized smaller parties like NNPP for their limited influence, highlighting PDP’s enduring presence across Nigeria as a critical factor in its electoral success.
