Governor Seyi Makinde has officially presented the Staff of Office to the new Alaafin of Oyo, Abimbola Owoade, at a ceremony held in his office in Agodi, Ibadan, on Monday.

Earlier reports by PUNCH Online had indicated that Owoade was set to receive his appointment letter and staff of office on the same day.

A government source had confirmed, “He (Prince Owoade) is in town and will receive his appointment letter from the state government tomorrow (Monday) to begin his duties as Alaafin.”

Makinde had approved Owoade’s appointment, which was officially announced in a statement on Friday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade.

The historic ceremony was attended by a distinguished group of dignitaries, including traditional rulers, religious leaders, government officials, and excited Oyo indigenes.

The event began with prayers from Islamic, Christian, and traditional clerics, followed by cultural performances that marked a significant moment in the history of Oyo.

In his remarks, Governor Makinde praised the new Alaafin, describing him as a leader with the responsibility to uphold and advance the cultural and historical legacy of the Oyo Kingdom.

He expressed confidence in Owoade’s leadership, stating, “We are assured that Oba Owoade will lead with wisdom, integrity, and a strong commitment to fostering unity.”

In his acceptance speech, Owoade expressed his dedication to the development of the kingdom and the well-being of its people.

“I will devote myself to the advancement and prosperity of the Oyo Kingdom while ensuring that the traditions and values that have sustained us for generations remain steadfast,” he pledged.

Owoade’s ascension follows the passing of the late Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III in April 2022, who had ruled the Oyo Kingdom for over fifty years.

The new monarch’s reign is expected to focus on cultural preservation, youth empowerment, and economic development within the kingdom.
