The Lagos State Police Command has reiterated that Ayomide Adeleye, who confessed to murdering his friend and neighbor, Christianah Idowu, has been formally charged with murder and remains in custody.

This statement was issued by the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, to dispel reports claiming that Adeleye was not held in any Lagos correctional facility.

Hundeyin clarified, “Ayomide Adeleye has been charged with murder and is currently remanded for the same offence.”

He further explained that confusion may have arisen from a mistaken identity involving another individual with the same name.

“Another person named Ayomide Adeleye, remanded for a different offence, was released in April 2024, long before the current suspect committed his crime,” Hundeyin said. He criticized the dissemination of misinformation, emphasizing the importance of relying on verified sources.

“An outfit that claims to prioritize investigation should uphold that standard. Trusting unverified ‘sources’ instead of the Correctional Service spokesperson leads to this kind of error.”

Adeleye, a 200-level Philosophy student at Olabisi Onabanjo University, confessed in September to killing Idowu, a 300-level student at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Following his confession, Adeleye appeared before Magistrate Seyi Omodara at the Ogba Magistrate Court on November 5.

The magistrate issued a remand warrant directing the police to detain Adeleye at the Ikoyi Correctional Center while awaiting advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.
