The tragic incident occurred today when a petrol tanker overturned, spilling fuel. People gathered at the site to scoop up the spilled fuel, and disaster struck when an explosion ignited the area.
Kumar Tsukwam, the head of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State, confirmed the death toll, stating that 70 people have been reported dead so far.
The explosion took place on Dikko-Maje Road, near the Badeggi Fuelling Station in Suleja Local Government Area.
Earlier reports indicated that the victims were mostly youths and some women from the surrounding area.
In addition to the fatalities, many others sustained injuries, and several houses and shops were completely destroyed by the ensuing fire.
An eyewitness shared details with Vanguard, describing how the explosion occurred when a second tanker arrived to transfer fuel from the overturned one.
As this process began, local residents, mainly youths and some women, rushed to the scene to scoop the fuel.
The situation turned deadly when a loud explosion occurred, engulfing the scoopers and the two vehicles in flames.
Many of the victims were trapped and burned beyond recognition, despite warnings from others about the danger.
As the fire spread, many people fled the area, unable to help, as there was no immediate response from fire services.
FRSC Sector Commander Tsukwam confirmed the incident, noting that he was compiling a report for further details.
Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, expressed his shock and sorrow over the explosion, calling it “worrisome, heartbreaking, and unfortunate.”
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Bologi Ibrahim, the governor extended condolences to the families of the victims and urged people to prioritize safety.
He also directed relevant agencies to take necessary actions and called on security forces to ensure safety in the area.
