The Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Engr. Noimot Salako-Oyedele, has dismissed social media reports claiming she was attacked by students protesting at the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY) in Abeokuta.
Salako-Oyedele made the clarification during a visit from the institution’s management, led by the rector, Arc. ‘Koye Jolaoso, who explained that the students were conducting a peaceful, guided protest over the alleged introduction of new school fees.
In a statement issued by the Head of Public Relations and Protocol at MAPOLY, Mr. Yemi Ajibola, Salako-Oyedele explained that while en route to Alamala for the Armed Forces Remembrance Day event, her security team noticed a crowd.
Her driver was instructed to take a detour, which he did without incident. She later returned to her residence to avoid the crowd and eventually proceeded to her destination on behalf of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun.
“If I had been attacked, I would not have attended the program in Alamala. I went after I was informed the crowd had dispersed,” she stated. “I urge everyone to be cautious with social media as it has led many to inquire about my wellbeing after reading or hearing false reports.”
She also encouraged students to resolve issues through peaceful dialogue.
Earlier, Rector Arc. Jolaoso expressed regret on behalf of the students, offering an apology for the incident and any embarrassment caused. “We have come on behalf of the Governing Council, management, and students to apologize and seek your forgiveness as a mother,” he said.
The delegation also included the Deputy Rector, Dr. Mrs. Yetunde Lanre-Iyanda; Registrar, Mrs. Olubunmi Elewodalu; Polytechnic Librarian, Alhaja Basirat Akintunde; Bursar, Mrs. Folasade Madariola, FCA; Chairmen and Secretary of the three staff unions; and the PAR in the Registrar’s office, Mrs. Feyisola Ayeni.
