Controversial Nigerian singer Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, was absent from a highly anticipated concert in Ibadan on Thursday, January 2, 2025, organized by Fuji star Taye Currency.
Portable’s absence followed a wave of backlash stemming from a controversial remark he made about the people of Ibadan and Oyo State.
In a viral video last year, Portable criticized residents of the region, claiming they lacked buildings with Plaster of Paris (PoP) ceilings—a feature he boasted about in an apartment he rented for his ex-lover, Queen Dami.
He asserted that such designs were common in Lagos and other parts of Nigeria but rare in Ibadan and Oyo State. These comments sparked outrage, with many accusing the singer of disrespecting the region.
Although Portable had apologized and publicly pleaded for forgiveness, the controversy lingered. He was scheduled to perform at Taye Currency’s New Year Concert in Ibadan, but security concerns forced his withdrawal.
According to Jarule Entertainment, the event’s organizers, the decision was made to avoid any potential unrest.
“We consulted with the commissioner of police and even signed an undertaking for security,” a representative from Jarule Entertainment told Tribune Online.”
“Despite the measures in place, we received reports of individuals asking for Portable’s whereabouts and staying in Ibadan. To ensure safety, we decided that he should stay away from the event.”
The organizer confirmed that Portable was the only artist unable to perform, calling the situation unfortunate but necessary to prioritize security. “We hope the issue is resolved soon,” he added.
Portable’s absence ignited reactions across social media.
@KarenSpikes: “So Portable thought he could just perform at Taye Currency’s show like nothing happened? Ibadan lo mo—o mo Layipo!”
@TheAdukeIbadan: “Ìbàdàn lo mọ̀, o ò mọ láyípo. As of this morning, only Portable can translate this proverb.”
@Ahfo_: “Portable will need to beg Ibadan people because anywhere they see him, it’s over for him.”
@nuclearpr_: “Portable will come online to brag later, but Ibadan has shown him his level.”
The controversy continues to trend, with many calling for further apologies from the singer to mend his strained relationship with Ibadan’s residents.
