Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, has alleged threats to his life and family following his New Year message that criticised Nigeria’s economic and security situation.
Obi disclosed this in a statement shared on his verified Twitter account on Monday, January 6, 2025. The former Anambra State governor revealed he had received a barrage of messages, including threats, in reaction to his remarks.
In his New Year address, Obi condemned the Federal Government’s claims of economic improvement, asserting that Nigeria remains a global poverty capital.
He highlighted the displacement of families due to banditry and terrorism, describing Nigeria as one of the most insecure and least peaceful countries in the world.
Additionally, he criticised President Bola Tinubu for frequent international trips, urging him to conduct medical examinations within Nigeria.
“Mr President, out of the approximately 580 days in office, it is reported that you have spent over 30 percent, or 180 days, on more than 30 publicly recorded overseas trips,” Obi stated.
In response, the All Progressives Congress (APC) spokesperson, Felix Morka, accused Obi of overstepping boundaries.
Speaking during an Arise Television interview, Morka said, “Peter Obi is really crossing the line. The campaigns are over, and he needs to relax and allow his lawyers to handle his case at the tribunal. Accusing the APC of attacking his personal life is ridiculous.”
Reacting to Morka’s comments, Obi questioned the allegations against him, resharing his New Year message and inviting Nigerians to judge if he had indeed crossed any lines.
He wrote, “Have I really crossed the line? My New Year message has now led to threats against my life, my family, and those around me. While I have received all sorts of messages, Felix Morka has accused me of ‘crossing the line’ and warned of consequences.”
Obi vowed that the threats would not silence him, asserting that Nigeria is sliding into “an authoritarian and repressive regime, where freedom of expression is being systematically suppressed.”
