The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has announced plans to hold a nationwide rally on February 4 to protest the 50% hike in telecom tariffs imposed by the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC).

NLC President, Mr. Joe Ajaero, made the announcement in a statement following the Congress’s National Administrative Council (NAC) meeting held Wednesday in Abuja. Ajaero expressed strong opposition to the hike, calling it excessively burdensome on citizens.

“We reject the 50% telecom tariff hike as it is too harsh for the average Nigerian,” Ajaero stated.

“To voice our collective opposition, the NLC will organize a nationwide rally on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. This rally will send a clear message about the dangers of placing such a burden on a population already struggling with the high costs of fuel, food, electricity, and inflation.”

Ajaero emphasized that all NLC affiliates and state councils must begin mobilizing for the protest, urging civil society groups to join the movement.

He called on Nigerian workers, the informal sector, and the public to stand in solidarity against what he called an unjust policy.

“The NLC demands an immediate suspension of the 50% telecom tariff hike,” Ajaero said.

“We call on the Federal Government, the Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC), and the National Assembly to engage in meaningful dialogue with stakeholders to review the proposed increase in light of the country’s economic realities.”

If the demands are not addressed, Ajaero warned of possible escalated actions, including a nationwide telecom boycott and other mass actions aimed at resisting policies that contribute to poverty and inequality.

“We remain committed to fighting for the welfare and dignity of Nigerian workers and citizens,” Ajaero concluded. “We will continue to challenge policies that undermine our people’s well-being.” (NAN)
